Working as a Web Developer & Designer calls for a broad knowledge set.
This list serves as an overview of my technical, creative and analytical skills.
A website is an essential way of reaching your customers and prospective clients. With almost a decade of experience, I'm an expert at building, managing and optimising websites.
Web Apps (PWAs)
Whilst website's should always be designed to work well on mobiles; sometimes a 'Progressive Web App' is the ideal solution. PWAs are small websites that are designed to act like a typical app - they also have the added benefit of working well across devices, can be downloaded directly from websites (without the need of an app store) and take up very little space on a user's phone.
HTML Emails (E‑Shots)
If you have an existing client list, sending out a visually engaging HTML Email can be a low-cost but effective way of marketing your products/services, promoting and event, requesting feedback, delivering a survey, etc.
Server & Database Management
Most digital systems and tools (not just websites) require a robust server and an efficient database. I have a lot of experience working with a range of Windows and Linux based servers.
This overlaps with server management - but setup, configuration and maintenance of a server for hosting websites is a popular need. It's essential to select and configure your web hosting platform to support your website without it slowing down, performing badly in other countries or crashing all together.
Most of my skills are software based - but I'm also experienced at building PCs, configuring networks, setting up printers, designing a backup plan, repairing laptops/mobiles and engineering custom hardware.
Design & UX
I initially started as a website developer (building website based on expisting designs) - but this quickly taught me how to efficiently design digital tools. Also, through constant and regular research into design trends and UX principles, I've become an expert at assessing user journeys and designing tools that users can use efficiently and without frustration.
Through my experience with digital development of tools, I've diversified into graphic design for digital platforms and traditional print media.
Traditional graphic design doesn't tend to include the ability to create 3D models and environments - these are essential for use in Virtual and Augmented Reality applications/websites and animations.
After learning many 2D animation skills for a Norfolk council run R&D project, and obtaining an After Effects animation qualification; creating high quality 2D graphics and typographic animations has become one of my greatest passions.
Photography & Video Editing
For a graphic designer and animater, the next step was of course learning to capture high quality photos and videos. Primarily, I focus on low light and long-distance animal photography - but I can turn my hand to anything needed.
SEO, SEM &
Many developers build a great tool but neglect its visibility - It's so important to ensure a website is built with cutting edge Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) principles in mind. Beyond this, I have many years of experience advising clients on content improvements (to better cater to search engines) and can also provide regular statistics on traffic/usage/conversions - allowing you to define goals and measure success.
